Domino's Testing Human Limits
Despite ethical concerns about testing on humans, researchers say their work was necessary to determine the boundary between garbage and food.

Ewok Treehouse Resort?
Hey Star Wars geeks, check this out. Our Planet Retreats, an innovative UK-based company, is building eco-resorts in gorgeous pristine locations like the Phillipines, Vanatu, and Papua New Guinea. Visiting guests stay in simple floating spheres in the trees that are reached by spiral stairs. Crafted from fiberglass and built by locals, each sphere can accommodate up to 4 people. An unfurnished sphere costs $2,500. Fully furnished spheres are also available at a higher price tag (much higher actually).
What's missing? Well, I don't see any bordoks (does anybody even get that?) and I don't see a crapper. But hey, I'm a man, the woods are my toilet. Heck the world is my toilet. Anway, check out these pics of your dream vacation:

Arkansas Capital Haunted?

So I admit... I watch Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi Network and even the foreign stepbrother Ghost Hunters International on the same channel, but I'm not so sure I really believe all the hullabalu about spirits and hauntings and such. Sure, everybody likes a good ghost story and I've always been fascinated with tales of spooks and hitchhiking prom queens, but it'll probably take a ghost slapping me around a bit to make me a believer.
Well, this story was in our legitimate (arguable) statewide newspaper yesterday. I found it interesting to know that some believe our state capital is... HAUNTED. (GASP!) I've heard tales of some local houses and even The Old State House, right across the street from where I work, but this is the first I've heard about the capital building.
Anyway, decide for yourself I guess. Here's the story:
Group looks into reports of ghosts inside Capitol
They say haunting proof was found
By Charlie Frago
LITTLE ROCK — Voices so faint they can’t be heard with the unaided ear. Floating orbs with comet-like tails.
A paranormal investigative group that spent eight hours poking around the state Capitol on Saturday night says it’s convinced that the seat of state government is, well, haunted.
“We’re still reviewing, but there’s something paranormal in there,” said Alan Lowe, 55, of Roland, a co-founder and the investigation director of Spirit Seekers, a group dedicated to finding the supernatural side of the Natural State.
At about 7:30 p.m., Capitol police opened the otherwise closed building to eight group members, who spent the next eight hours snapping photos and recording video and audio all over public-access areas of the building, which was completed in 1915.
Using sensitive audio equipment, the group asked questions and then waited for 30 seconds.
“To give [the ghosts] a chance to respond,” Lowe explained.
One questioner asked if any nearby spirit had been a senator, Lowe said.
“Real lightly and faint in the back, you hear ‘No,’” Lowe said.
Another tape picked up a “grunt” and something whispered “Edward” when asked his name, Lowe said.
Ghost-busting the Capitol has been on Lowe’s to-do list since he and his dad were accidentally locked inside while viewing the Christmas decorations there about 45 years ago.
He didn’t see any ghost then (“I was just scared,” he said), but another visit on a slow weekend day a decade ago yielded an apparition walking up the steps to the House of Representatives. The ghost turned and tipped his hat, Lowe said.
Spirit Seekers is still analyzing its data, including video. Some photos appear to show floating balls of energy called “spirit orbs,” Lowe said.
It’s not unusual for groups to request after-hours use of the Capitol, said Natasha Naragon, a spokesman for Secretary of State Charlie Daniels, who is in charge of the building.
“But this is the first time in institutional memory that we’ve had this type of request,” Naragon said.
Daniels’ office gave the green light to the group. It didn’t require any extra manpower or other costs. The Capitol is staffed around the clock with officers from the state Capitol’s own police force, Naragon said.
Spirit Seekers Paranormal Investigation Research and Intervention Team isn’t the only outfit that has been drawn to the Capitol. Movies have been shot there, one of which involved letting motorcycles rumble over its floors. A rocket was even fired at the dome, leaving a black smirch and then-Secretary of State Bill McCuen with a political hotfoot.
Lowe’s group has investigated paranormal activities around the state, according to the group’s Web site, www.thespiritseekers.org.
“Where the Here & the Hereafter Meet!” proclaims Lowe’s business card. The group also solicits donations on its site.
Capitol police officers said the Spirit Seekers quietly went about their business.
The group searched all the public areas in the 247,000-square foot building, but the heavy marble rendered their radios useless.
Before the Capitol was built, the state’s first penitentiary occupied the grounds and Lowe said he was intrigued of reports of prison ghosts wandering the building.
No felonious phantoms were detected, though. And the tale of a woman who wanders the halls in a wedding gown remains a ghost story for now.
His group broke up into teams of two to conduct the search.
“We always go out in twos,” Lowe said. “For safety.”
From the ghosts?
“No, what if you went out by yourself and fell down? Who would help?” Lowe said. “The ghosts here are real Caspers.”
Naragon, whose office is in the basement, said she hasn’t noticed any spectral signs.
“There’s a lot of strange activity, but none of the paranormal sort,” she said.

Movie Review: Anaconda III

A mercenary-for-hire (David Hasselhoff) accepts a mission from a billionaire to capture a couple of escaped, giant snakes that could possibly help cure a terminal illness, if they don't eat the hell out of everybody first.
First off, this really has nothing to do with the first 2 Anaconda movies. It's not a sequel by any means but just another Sci-Fi Channel movie with a giant monster on the loose and it's using the Anaconda series title to cash in a bit. Hell I never even figured out where they were. It was filmed in Romania and they're romping through some woods, but it's no jungle. Some of the coolest parts of the first 2 films was time spent on the river because you never knew where the giant snakes were or when they were going to start chomping, but for some reason these anacondas didn't seem to care for the water at all and are only in it to swim across a river or lake or something.
The acting, led by one of the greatest actors of our generation, David Hasslehoff aka The Hoff, is atrocious. What makes it even funnier is that his character is trying to be all bad ass, but it's just not happening nor remotely believable. The female lead, played by Crystal Allen, has the standard Sci-Fi Channel movie outfit on for women, and that is a tight tank top so that's a major plus. She's pretty hot. She also kicks the Hoff's ass so that's another plus. Who hasn't wanted to do that I ask you?
The snakes are supposed to be some genetically altered giant versions of Anacondas, but they don't do much squeezing and are more inclined to bite various limbs and heads off their victims. One snake even likes to stab victims with it's tail. Seriously. But it does surprisingly get pretty gruesome and has lots of blood. Unfortunately, the snakes just looks incredibly bad. It looks like the special effects were possibly done on a laptop from Best Buy. The snakes, the gore, the fountains of blood and even them driving their vehicles in front of a moving backdrop looks hilarious.
Good news? Well, the first 45 minutes or so are actually a whole lot of fun. The ridiculous looking snakes are snacking on everybody in sight and our "good guys" are doing 1 moronic thing after another to turn themselves into snake food. But it seems like after about the half-way point of the movie it turned into to more of a search for the snakes, with them walking around basements or factories or whatever for 3 or 4 minutes at a time slowly peeking around corners. They get shocked by a chicken (which they shoot at) and later get shocked by rats (which they shoot at... many times).
It's a big, dumb, fun b-movie that makes little sense, has terrible special effects, wretched acting, bad, predictable ending and a hot blonde in a tank top. I guess that's an OK way to spend 90 minutes... laughing and shaking your head.
3/10

Anew Revolution Video
New video for the song "Done" from hard rock/Nu metal band Anew Revolution out of Austin, Tx, which features Ex-Unloco frontman Joey Duenas and includes Frank "Frankie" Salvaggio and Rob Urbani, former members of Slaves on Dope. Noah Drake Is Still Kickin'
Here's a live video (well, it's lip synced live at least) for Rick Springfield's "What's Victoria's Secret?" from his new CD Venus in Overdrive, which hit record stores today. I ever tell you about the time I saw this guy in concert... I think it was 1984? I went with 3 women and there were about 11,000 more in the Mid South Coliseum in Memphis and every single one of them in there screamed the whole time. I didn't scream, but I enjoyed the show and the scenery. Me and about 50 other guys total I'm guessing.
Shaddup you.
Richard Lewis Springthorpe is still bringin' it. In a pop sort of way of course.
And as a bonus, here's a little something from the wayback machine:

Regular Tuesday Stuff
First, some very cool news for Dean Koontz fans:
Novelist Dean Koontz told San Diego Comic-Con attendees on Saturday that he now as a movie script adapted from his book "Odd Thomas" in hand and he's very pleased with the results. Koontz also teased that an unnamed actor has signed on to play the title character. Koontz added that after reading the script, which was written by an unnamed screenwriter, he 'fell over' because it was 'so perfect.'
And more good news for music fans, at least I think it is as I personally love Best Buy:
Hoping to cater to everyone from the garage guitarist to a recording musician, Best Buy Co. Inc. is announcing a massive new initiative that sets aside store space for an array of musical instruments and gear in dozens of sites nationwide. The nation's largest consumer electronics retailer will announce Tuesday that it plans to open as many as 85 of the music centers inside its stores by the end of the year and could add even more locations in the future, executives told The Associated Press. Each site will use about 2,500 square feet of retail space and include roughly 1,000 different products with well-known brand names such as Fender, Gibson, Drum Workshop and Roland.
Well, it will save some musicians money but I'm guessing a lot of them will refuse to go along and stay with local music stores, we'll see. Interesting strategy though. And speaking of spending money at Best Buy, here's new stuff in stores today to spend your money on, since gas prices have gotten so unbelievably low lately:
* Rolling Stones ~ Shine a Light DVD (2008 docufilm, directed by Martin Scorsese)
* Alice Cooper ~ Along Came A Spider CD (previous blog)
* Rick Springfield ~ Venus In Overdrive (first album of original material since 2003)
* Scars on Broadway ~ s/t CD (System of a Down-ers Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan)
* Soulfly ~ Conquer CD
* Walls of Jericho ~ The American Dream CD
* Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay DVD (comedy)
* Doomsday DVD (reviewed here)
* Never Back Down DVD (movie about some kids fighting mixed-martial arts style)
* Lost Boys: The Tribe DVD (sequel to the classic Lost Boys movie from the 80s)

Movie Review: Hellboy II: The Golden Army

The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures set to be unleashed, The Golden Army.
I think this is one of those rare occurrences where the sequel to a film blows the first one away. I thought the first Hellboy movie was just OK, not as good as I'd hoped being a fan of Hellboy. The 2nd movie didn't let me down at all though.
It's not so much the storyline that's great though, it's the visuals and the creatures that steal the show. There are a lot of new characters introduced and many of them are just really cool and the entire fantasy world is very inventive and fun. There's a lot more playful banter between the "good guys" as well and that helps the movie feel light. Hellboy's smart little quips and the view of all the "monsters" as the normal ones while humans are the real freaks are at the heart of the old Hellboy comics and that comes across much better in this movie.
Director Guillermo del Toro is the best at this sort of visually insane movie with the stuff he comes up with, and I was reminded often of his movie Pan's Labyrinth, which I love. There's even one scene that feels a whole lot like the Star Wars cantina scene I thought where the team goes underground to a whole gaggle of weirdness. I can't wait for the DVD version just to pause and get time to check out all of the characters because there's just too much going on to really appreciate it all. That's actually the case in a lot of instances though.
In summary, it's very imaginative and visually mind-blowing. It's the really fun, action-packed comic book movie that the original film never attained. If del Toro is on board, count me in for a third movie.
8/10

Weekend Wrap
I had a pretty fun full weekend, despite the sweltering heat, and it wasn't because I sat in the A/C the whole time although in hindsight that seems like a pretty decent plan as well. On Friday night I went to an outdoor amphitheater to see Willie Nelson and B.B. King. We started out the night up in a tower overlooking the amphitheater so we had a pretty cool (free) view and a nice breeze circulating. Great place to watch the sunset as well. We watched most of B.B.'s set from up there and not being a big fan of his it was still a show I thought was pretty good. He's not real active, choosing to sit in a chair most of the time and just make his guitar wail. What is he now, like 104? For Willie we walked down among the masses and that turned the heat up with all the bodies and no breeze. Willie is another good show, but at his age his performance skills are pretty limited to just singing and making the occasional funny quip. He's got a great library of songs though and it was nice just to be down on the river on a hot Summer night listening to tunes from a legend and having a beer.
Saturday I did the ole trusty pub crawl, only choosing to hit the heat between stops. Someone should build an air-conditioned tunnel between all the pubs for maximum pub crawl fun. People joined the crawl, people left the crawl and it ended with 4 of us watching a band on the opposite side of the river from where it started. The trail in order was Sticky Fingerz, Boscos, Flying Saucer, Underground Pub, Rev Room, Willie D's, Creegans and finally Cornerstone before home. Good times.
I got up Sunday and did what every good American does on Sunday morning... watched all the stuff on TiVo that I missed on Friday and Saturday night! Actually I was just wanting to watch the EliteXC fights from Saturday night. I thought they were all very watchable fights too, with several good slugfests and lots of action for the most part. No outcomes were too shocking but even fights like Nick Diaz vs Thomas Denny that I thought would be one-sided turned out to be nice little brawls. Thomas Denny was game. I was glad to see Ruthless Robbie hold on to the title belt as well. The fight wasn't as good as their first meeting but it wasn't a bad fight by any means. After that I ventured back outside for a baptism at a local lake. No, I didn't get baptized but my niece did. The heat index was approximately 137 degrees so I can only imagine they do it this time of the year outdoors like that to deter people from hell. After all the sweating I hit the A/C again for my usual Sunday matinee, this time Hellboy 2.
Here's a few pics from some of the weekend just for the heck of it.

Theory of a Deadman Video
New video from Theory of a Deadman called Bad Girlfriend. Sounds very Nickleback-ish, which isn't a bad thing as far as record sales go. They're also from Canada (Delta, British Columbia) and just happen to be signed by Nickelback's Chad Kroeger to 604 Records. Very radio-friendly track with fun lyrics I think.

Sweet Upcoming Game
My favorite home video game growing up was Atari's Adventure, in which you were represented on the screen by a dot. Your "sword" was an arrow.
Check out Far Cry 2 by UBI Soft, coming for most gaming systems Oct 1st. Let's just say you're not a dot.
The game will be entirely open-ended and non-linear. Instead of using individual maps, the game will take place in a sprawling nondescript land in Africa, with terrain ranging from Savannah to jungle. The gameplay area will be around 50 sq km. Some members of the Ubisoft Montreal team spent 2 weeks in several locations in Africa filming and photographing native wildlife. The team will use the animal footage and environment photos to create an extremely realistic environment.
The goal of the player's character will be to find and assassinate "The Jackal", an arms dealer that has been selling weapons to both sides of the conflict that's tearing apart a small fictional African country.

The Step Brother Files
I'm going to see a pair of legends tonight as B.B. King and Willie Nelson put on a show at the amphitheater. Yes it'll be hot out but c'mon, it's Willie! I've seen both performers before and neither disappoint. B.B. King is still a phenomenal guitar player and who doesn't know about a dozen Willie Nelson songs? The guy has one of the most unique voices in music history.
Ho hum, another day another record for The Dark Night. The latest record it set is biggest 6-day opening of all time and it's not even close:
1. The Dark Night - $222 mil
2. Dead Man's Chest - $183.7
3. Revenge of the Sith - $182.7
After it's 6 days have been tallied, it's already at #3 this year on the domestic chart, behind on Indy Jones and Iron Man. Unreal. But anyway, 2 new movies dare sneak into the theaters today to challenge the juggernaut that is The Dark Knight.
Step Brothers
The Plot: Two spoiled adult men (Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly) are pulled into a new sibling rivalry after their respective single parents get hitched.
My Thoughts: The combination of these 2 clowns is comedy gold for my money. If you didn't like Talladega Nights, I'm guessing you'll want to skip this. I think it looks hilarious. It's rated R, which is a bit different for a Will Ferrell comedy so it may be a bit raunchy even.
The X-Files: I Want To Believe
Plot: ??? *cue weird X-Files music*
My Thoughts: I haven't read a lot about this and nobody seems to know much about the plot online anywhere. I do know that Chris Carter directed it and David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are both in it as Mulder and Scully, so that's really all I need to know to want to see it. I'm there.

Angels On The Moon
Here's a very cool track from a band called Thriving Ivory out of San Francisco, CA. The name of the song is "Angels on the Moon". They remind me a bit of more mellow pop/rock bands like Ingram Hill or Five For Fighting. The vocalist has a really unique sound I think.

More Random Pics
Here's some random pictures I found that might help you make it through to the weekend. I thought they were interesting.
Cute shot of a flying shihtzu at some dog show.
Um, I think the kid was supposed to ride the sheep, not vice-versa. Could be some New Zealand dating ritual though, who knows.
A baby red panda adopted by a house cat after being rejected by its mother
Looks like me at my favorite bar on a Friday after work
Heh heh, apparently Kevin sucks
I have no words for this
Might wanna scan through the manual on how to put a helmet on
How we eat ice cream in Arkansas... with bacon
This is just wrong. Funny, but wrong.
Hmmm, can't really decide here...

Used Car: Slight Water Damage
Think you've had a bad day?
In Stewartstown, Pa. Kim Taylor thought she had set the emergency brake. But her wayward red Miata convertible nonetheless rolled downhill, crashed through a fence and plunged into her neighbors' in-ground pool.
Bummer. But it does make for some entertaining pics.

This Idiots Guide To The Die Hard Movies
I dig Bruce Willis and most of his work, but it didn't start out that way. I couldn't stand the show Moonlighting and all of it's smaltziness, so I figured the guy was stuck on the small screen in crappy romance roles forever. Boy was I wrong, because in 1988 along came a little film called Die Hard. It just happened to set the standard for the big budget action movie as we know it today. So I've got the box set and figured I'd watch all 4 movies and I did just that over the last week. Here's my skinny:
Die Hard (1988)
Plot: New York cop John McClane gives terrorists a dose of their own medicine as they hold hostages in an LA office building.
Notes: It's funny how some things change so much so quickly. I actually cringed not only when McClane showed us he had a gun on a commercial airliner but also when he lit up a cigarette walking through the terminal, big no-nos now... McClain is married in this movie, but only loosely as he's living in NY doing his job and his wife and kids have moved to LA to take a high paying job in the high rise that the terrorist target... The story takes place on Christmas Eve... story is set in Los Angeles
Trivia: This was based on a book by Roderick Thorp entitled "Nothing Lasts Forever" - a sequel to another book entitled "The Detective", which in 1968 was made into a film starring Frank Sinatra. Coincidentally, Bruce Willis made his movie debut in The First Deadly Sin (1980) walking out of a bar as Sinatra walks into it.
More Trivia: Bruce Willis was the fifth choice for the main character. It originally went to Arnold Schwarzenegger, then Sylvester Stallone, then Burt Reynolds, then Richard Gere before Willis got it.
Moneyshot: The top of the skyscraper blows all to hell
Best Quote:
Hans: Do you really think you have a chance against us, Mr. Cowboy?
John McClane: Yippee-ki-yay, motherf&%$#@! (this would become the catchphrase for all the films)
Box Office: The budget was $28 mil... took in $83 mil U.S. and $138.7 worldwide

Die Hard 2: Die Harder (1990)
Plot: John McClane is forced to battle mercenaries who seize control of an airport's communications and threaten to cause plane crashes if their demands are not met.
Notes: Set 2 years later, again at Christmastime... One of the women on the plane has a taser. Can you imagine trying to get a taser on a commercial airline now?... McClain has a beeper and has to seek out pay phones; who remembers those days?... One of the bad guys is Robert Patrick (John Doggett on The X-Files and a T-1000 in Terminator 2)... Dennis Franz (Sipowicz on NYPD Blue) plays a cop... McClain is still married, happily it seems, and now they live in the same city... whereas the first film was a bit on the unrealistic side, this film takes things even further... takes place in Washington, DC area
Trivia: Based on the novel "58 Minutes" by Walter Wager. Hence the French title "58 Minutes Pour Vivre" ("58 Minutes To Live").
Best Quote: McClane: Just once, I'd like a regular, normal Christmas. A little eggnog... a f&%#$n' Christmas tree... a little turkey. But, no. I gotta crawl around in this motherf&$%#n' tin can.
Moneyshot: McClain gets ejected from a plane sitting on a runway, shooting straight up toward the camera while an explosion goes on behind him
Box Office: The budget was around $70 mil... did $117.5 mil domestic and $239.5 worldwide

Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995)
Plot: John McClane and a store owner must play a bomber's deadly game as they race around New York while trying to solve riddles and stop him from blowing up more locations.
Notes: takes place in New York City... Samuel L. Jackson plays his "sidekick" in this one, providing some great moments between the two... the first of the series not set at Christmas, it still references it with sarcastic comments regarding Santa Claus. The shoplifting kid also states that "It is Christmas you could steal city hall."... McClane and his wife are separated by this time, and although she doesn't appear he does talk to her on the phone at the end... they finally have cell phones in this one!
Trivia: Director John McTiernan considered either editing out the beginning bombing of the department store, or moving the release date back as they felt that the American public might still be sensitive to bombing due to closeness of dates of the Oklahoma City bombing
More Trivia: Laurence Fishburne was the original choice to play Zeus Carver, but turned down the part. When he reconsidered the decision, Samuel L. Jackson was already cast.
Moneyshot: McClain surfs on a dumptruck as a wall of water pushes it out of a tunnel
Best Quote: Zeus: Well, you can stick your well-laid plan up your well-laid ass.
Box Office: $90 mil budget... did $100 mil domestic and $361 mil worldwide

Live Free or Die Hard (2007)
Plot: John McClane takes on an Internet-based terrorist organization who is systematically shutting down the United States by hacking into government computer systems.
Notes: Takes place around Washington, DC... the first film in the series to have a PG-13 rating instead of R, for commercial reasons... Another side-kick in this one as Justin Long play a computer geek who stays at McClain's side as he's been assigned to deliver him to the FBI... easily the most unrealistic of the series, McClain dodges sure death too many times to count and there are plenty of factual errors... McClain's grown-up daughter is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Death Proof, Final Destination 3, Black Christmas)... McClain is divorced and his ex-wife nor his son never make an appearance, his daughter and he rarely talk it's pointed out... Timothy Olyphant (Hitman) plays what I consider the best villain of the series... Kevin Smith (Silent Bob from Clerks) plays a geeky computer whiz, tough casting there
Trivia: Justin Timberlake was in talks to play John McClane's son. The story originally involved McClane's son, Jack. Originally, he was supposed to be the computer hacker John has to deliver to the FBI. Eventually that idea was dropped and the hacker became the Matt Ferrell character. It was then decided to bring in his daughter Lucy to keep up the series continuity of McLane always having a personal stake in what happens in the story.
Moneyshot: McClain and Ferrell duck just as a flying car avoids them by inches, smashing into 2 cars instead
Best Quote: McClain "You know what you get for being a hero? Nothin'. You get shot at. You get a little pat on the back, blah blah blah, attaboy. You get divorced. Your wife can't remember your last name. Your kids don't want to talk to you. You get to eat a lot of meals by yourself. Trust me, kid, nobody wants to be that guy."
Box Office: Budget of $110 mil... took in $134.5 U.S. and $383.5 worldwide
So there you have it, my (not so) quick recap of all the movies. Since the series began, there have been real life attacks on sky scrapers (1st movie) like the Twin Towers, airlines (2nd movie) too many times to say, buildings (3rd movie) like at Oklahoma City, subways (3rd movie) plenty of times and the nation's computers (4th movie) by hackers galore. The series got really unrealistic as far as the action goes, but still was grounded with some reality of today's society and terrorist fears. If only we had a real life John McClain! In every movie he had the living crap kicked out of him, always covered in blood and limping away injured at the end, but he always got his man. He's come along way since Moonlighting.
Die Hard (1988)
Plot: New York cop John McClane gives terrorists a dose of their own medicine as they hold hostages in an LA office building.Notes: It's funny how some things change so much so quickly.
