Halloween V.O.T.D., Now With Zombie Cats!

Here's Metallica's video for "All Nightmare Long" and it's perfect for Halloween. The band doesn't appear in it, but some funky spores reanimate dead tissue and we have all sorts of zombie fun as a result. Yes, there are zombie cats.

Here's what James Hetfield said about the song's lyrical meaning: “It was an attempt to get back to the H.P. Lovecraft mythos with Thing that Should Not Be, Call of Kthulu. This was about the hounds of Tindalos, which was another crazy mindf**k about these wolves that hunt through their nightmares and the only way you can get away from them is stay with angels. You can't even escape through sleep."

A Hound of Tindalos is a fictional creature created by Frank Belknap Long for the Cthulhu Mythos of H. P. Lovecraft. They first appeared in Long's short story "The Hounds of Tindalos" (1931). Lovecraft mentions the creatures in his short story "The Whisperer in Darkness" (1931).

"They are lean and athirst!" he shrieked... "All the evil in the universe was concentrated in their lean, hungry bodies. Or had they bodies? I saw them only for a moment, I cannot be certain."
~ Frank Belknap Long, "The Hounds of Tindalos"

Cool.

Halloween Video Of The Day

Here's Gwar's video "Let Us Slay" from their album "Lust In Space." The first thought that comes to mind is of course WTF?!?! But if you know Gwar this is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from them. These guys are waaaay out there. I think it's Halloween every day for them. I've never seen these guys in concert, but would love to sometime.

A Halloween Song

Here's stand-up comedian/musician Stephen Lynch on the Carson Daly Show (remember him) doing a Halloween song. I beg you to go buy this guy's albums if you don't own any. Or download some songs (legally dammit! pay the man!). He's hilarious.

Halloween Video Of The Day

Today is a classic... Dokken's Dream Warriors from their Back For The Attack (1987), which was written for the movie A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

Movie Review: 30 Days of Night: Dark Days

Synopsis: After surviving the incidents in Barrow, Alaska, Stella Olemaun relocates to Los Angeles, where she intentionally attracts the attention of the local vampire population in order to avenge the death of her husband, Eben.

A bit of good and bad I think with this (very) low-budget, straight-to-video sequel of a movie and graphic novel series that I'm a pretty big fan of.

The good? Well, there's tons and violence and gore and for a low-budget film I thought they did very well with it. The effects are better than your typical Saturday night SyFy channel fair but still below wide release quality films for the most part. Also, the dark mood stays in line with the first movie and the vampires aren't wimpified or toned down any, they're still brutal throat-chomping, blood slinging, body part chewing baddies (my exception is their teeth, they look pretty cheap). They stay in line with the vampire mythos introduced in the first movie pretty well.

The bad? Well, they're not in Alaska anymore, which is what I thought set the original story apart with the whole 30 straight dark days bit. Now they're in the LA underground and it's mostly been done before so it feels sort of deja vu plot wise. The story isn't enough to fill 90 minutes either so I thought the film just sort of drags quite a bit at times with bad pacing. Lastly, I'm not crazy about most of the cast and think better casting would have helped me.

Overall, it's not a horrible vampire movie by any means and is entertaining enough for a look if you like really violent vampire movies, not teenage garbage. I'd have liked more chomping and less gabbing though. It is a bit of a letdown as a big fan of the first one.

Book Review: Horns

Horns
by Joe Hill

Synopsis: Ignatius Perrish spent the night drunk and doing terrible things. He woke up the next morning with a thunderous hangover, a raging headache ... and a pair of horns growing from his temples.

A very intriguing and interesting book. Joe Hill creates very real characters that you can care about and pull for and this book has a very definite line drawn between what's good and what's evil so you're on a side. It's got horror elements but it's more of a theological argument most of the time. He does all this without too much seriousness or heaviness. There is plenty of humor here and just good storytelling.

The horns are introduced right away, but not explained and sort of just become part of the story. The lead character, Ig, is the only suspect in a crime in which his girlfriend was murdered. Ig was never charged or tried, but he was never cleared. In the court of public opinion he is and always will be guilty because his rich and connected parents pulled strings to make the investigation go away. Everyone, including God it seems, has abandoned him. Everyone, that is, but the devil inside. He now has power... for revenge? It's a pretty compelling set-up and as it unfolds it toggles between past and present and ranges from the supernatural to the realistic. It's all quite amusing.

In the end, I wasn't really satisfied with the explanations of the horns and why they come to be, but it's still interesting plot point and the book is a good read if you care for the Luciferian dark fantasy style.

Huge UFC Card Tonight

Now this is more like it! Tonight card for UFC 121: Lesnar vs. Velasquez is just massive. I'm serious in saying I'm interested and excited for the entire main card and ever the 2 fights on the preliminary card on Spike TV have something to offer for my tastes. Honestly, any of the 7 fights could be fight of the night. UFC has done their job promoting so many fighters that I'm familiar with all 14 fighters so there's vested interest. Their plan is working! I'll say this too, if there's a fight on this card better than the Billy Evangelista vs Waachiim Spiritwolf fight from last night it'll have to be one of the best all-time. Folks that was a 3 round war. Please Google for the video. The 3rd round was one of the best I've ever seen.

Predictions? I'm taking Lesnar to retain his belt, Shields to win, Tito to win and Thiago to hopefully beat up Diego Sanchez and stop him.

I woke up this morning and watched last night's Strikeforce Challengers 11 card from Showtime that I'd recorded, I'll mix in some college football all day, then end my night with this potential gem from the UFC. That's a bloody good Saturday.

Here's the card and the usual assortment of videos for your entertainment:

Main Card on PPV:

* Champ Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez (for heavyweight title)
* Martin Kampmann vs. Jake Shields
* Diego Sanchez vs. Paulo Thiago
* Matt Hamill vs. Tito Ortiz
* Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Brendan Schaub

Preliminary Card on Spike TV:

* Ryan Jensen vs. Court McGee
* Patrick Cote vs. Tom Lawlor

Movie Review: Predators

Synopsis: A group of elite warriors find themselves dropped in the middle of a jungle where they are hunted by members of a merciless alien race known as Predators.

So in the first few minutes as they're all waking up and stumbling through the jungle, I thought here we go again. It's going to be just like the original Predator film but with different actors. But it doesn't take long to realize that it's not like that at all. They're on another planet being hunted by several Predators plus several other-worldly life forms as well. All this equals lots of kills, action and bloody fun.

I was worried when I heard they'd plugged Adrian Brody into the main character role, thinking from King Kong and other films that he might be a bit on the wimpy side, but his character is great and pretty much a bad ass. I also love Danny Trejo (Machete), but I thought his screen time here was way too brief. Topher Grace is adequate but a bit hard to buy in his character by the end for me. Brazilian Alice Braga was quite easy on my eyes and a good choice for the heroin. Walton Goggins (The Shield, Justified, House of 1000 Corpses) and Laurence Fishburne round out a surprisingly excellent cast for an action movie. All of these characters are quite important and not just potential victims as there's a whole other level of movie beyond the pursuit, and that's how the warriors play (or don't play) well together, making the name of the film sort of a double-entendre.

Something that was missing for me from the Alien vs Predator sequels was much of a connection to the original Predator film beyond the creature. This one has several connections and a lot of nods to the original so if you're a big fan of that one you'll probably catch them and smile. They even play Long Tall Sally during the credits.

The special effects are solid and all the action sequences are pretty intense and well-done. There's gore and violence of course, and you're put right in the middle of the mayhem.

I think this is a solid and worthy entry in this franchise and hope to see more. I'd put this just behind the original, but ahead of Predators 2 and both Alien vs Predator films.

Halloween Video Of The Day

I'll be seeing this man later tonight, so your Halloween video for the day is the bizarre animated video from Rob Zombie for his song "Lords of Salem" from his CD Educated Horses back in 2006. The song and video are based on the Salem Witchcraft trials of the 17th century.

Halloween Hootenanny Setlists

Oh yeah, I'm going see Monster Ball AKA Halloween Hootenanny AKA The Gruesome Twosome AKA Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie and The Murderdolls show tonight in Little Rock. I've been scouring the net for info and below is the latest 3 setlist from all 3 bands... all within the last week. Looking over some other setlists these seem to be the pretty standard songs they're blasting every night, so it's what I expect this evening.

As far as I know, John 5 (Marilyn Manson), Joey Jordison (Slipknot, Stone Sour) and Piggy D are in Rob's backing band. The Murderdolls is Wednesday 13 and Joey Jordison and I think Racci Shay from Dope is drumming. Alice Cooper's band features Kerri Kelli, who has basically played in every 80s band ever, and Damon Johnson (Whiskey Falls, Brother Cane). Should be a helluva night of music and blood and the macabre!

Movie Review: How To Train Your Dragon

Synopsis: A hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself, and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed.

Visually stunning with a great story to boot, this is probably going to end up my favorite film yet from Dreamworks Animation. That's saying quite a bit too because I'm a pretty big fan of both the Madagascar and Shrek series as well as Kung Fu Panda.

There's just a lot of great inventive action that looks fantastic. It's also a pretty smart film with a nice social message about empathy for your fellow animals. Kids will enjoy it as well as adults with enough humor aimed at both.

The voice cast is perfect, but I thought Jay Baruchel stole the show as Hiccup. Equal parts sympathetic and sarcastically funny, he felt like a very modern character in an ancient time.

But back to what really makes this stand out to me... the look. The whole setting and scenery is just gorgeous throughout with fantastic lighting. The characters, especially the big bulky Vikings, are just a treat to the eyes and exactly as I feel like they should look: burly, boisterous and unstoppable. My favorite thing though is the creativity and the look of the dragons, especially Toothless. They give it so much character without it ever saying a word. It's like a big kitten, that also flips a switch and becomes the most badass dragon ever. All the dragons bring something pretty cool to the table and I wanted to see more of each.

Awesome film for the whole family, I now just wish I'd have seen it in 3D on the big screen.

Movie Review: The Karate Kid

Synopsis: Work causes a single mother to move to China with her young son (Jaden Smith). In his new home the boy embraces kung fu, taught to him by a reluctant master (Jackie Chan).

From the moment I heard they were remaking this I thought it would be total suckage, but actually I found it passably entertaining. It actually may even be better than the original, which I watched earlier this year again and frankly it's really not that great of a film.

It's not a shot-by-shot remake nor is it even close and in fact while the central story runs right along with the original, it differs in enough areas to make it seem new. A new cultural barrier for the new Karate Kid isn't just that he's being uprooted and planted across the country, but this time across the ocean in a whole other world. He's truly a vunerable outsider who stands out like a sore thumb and has a hard time adjusting.

And while our new "hero" seems a bit on the cocky side and brings on some of the pain with his stupid actions, overall he's a pretty likable kid that I didn't find it hard to root for. The new version of Mr. Miyagi that Jackie Chan plays is likewise easy to pull for and his quirky training techniques are fun to watch unfold. Chan has some good dramtic scenes in addition to his usual comical bits. It's never a full-on comedy, but there are plenty of laughs and smiles as the younger version of Will Smith has good comedic timing already and plays well with Chan.

By the end it's the same old hero vs villian showdown, feeling a bit cliched and very predictable. The only other real negative for me was that I felt it ran a bit long and got a little slow and wordy.

Still, it's an enjoyable remake that's definitely better than I expected.

Who Ya Gonna Call... Beatboxer!

This dude's name is apparently Matt Mulholland and he performs the Ghost Busters theme in 14 part harmony with some old style beatboxin', or maybe it's acappella. Hell I don't know. I do know that I laughed my head off at first, but then it hit me... this guy is awesome. Plus he looks a bit like the Staypuff Marshmellow guy. Bonus!

UFC 120 Tonight! (sort of)

Well maybe it's not live tonight, but at least UFC 120: Bisping vs Akiyama from London is free! Yes, no pay-per-viewing on this one. But at this point you can surf around the net and see who won already, but you don't want to do that because it'll ruin it for you right?

Overall, I'm not that excited about the card so I'm glad I'm not adding $44.95 to my cable bill this month. Well I am, but just not tonight. I'd love to see Bisping get KTFO but probably so would most of the good ole red-blooded Americans. The Conduit/Hardy fight should be interesting too. Here's the main card:

* Michael Bisping vs Yoshihiro Akiyama
* Carlos Condit vs Dan Hardy
* Mike Pyle vs John Hathaway
* Travis Browne vs Cheick Kongo
* Claude Patrick vs James Wilks

Movie Review: Zombie Strippers

Synopsis: A deadly government-controlled virus strikes a small Nebraska strip club, where the head dancer is quickly infected and transformed into a flesh-eating zombie — and becomes an instant hit with the customers. To be or not to be a zombie: That is the question facing the remaining jealous strippers in this outrageous horror comedy, starring slasher icon Robert Englund (best known as Freddy Krueger) and adult-entertainment icon Jenna Jameson.

OK, I'm not going to pretend for 1 second that this movie is good or anything, but I'd be lying if I'd didn't say that it's a whole helluva lot of fun. It is what it is and what it tries to be... a schlocky b-movie horror comedy. Most of the jokes fell a little flat to me, but there is more gratuitous nudity and gore than you can tuck in a rhino's g-string, whatever the hell that means.

I really didn't expect to like this as I'm usually not really into comedy horror, although I have some favorites, and zombie comedies especially are just overdone lately. But there are some pretty creative kills, gore and scenes (one particular involving a stripper and some ping-pong balls) that you just won't see anywhere else. And there's nudity, yes mucho nudity, and some surprisingly pretty attractive women. Jenna Jameson is the main stripper and that worried me because I don't find her attractive, but the supporting cast is a stage full of hot ladies. Also the music is pretty cool if you're into a gothy/rock/techno sort of thing.

UFC fighter Tito Ortiz (Jenna's real life man) has a cameo as a bouncer but it's very small, and that's disappointing as I sort of wished for more from him.

I realize that this film is moronic and silly at the surface, but there's a nice undercurrent of sharp political satire and some hidden depth to it. There are some veiled (and not so veiled) references to philosophers like Nietzsche and Ionesco and shots at the NRA, Republicans, religions and George Bush. The film is perfectly aware of how ludicrous it is and never tries to be anything else, with sort of a wink and a nod.

I'll say this in summary... if I watch a movie called Zombie Strippers, I only expect 2 things: zombies and strippers. If that title doesn't make you want to see this immediately... DO NOT SEE IT. It's every bit as over-the-top as you should expect.

Run Cracker, Run

I've committed myself to run in my first marathon. Plenty of 5K and 10Ks... but never the big 26.2. Yes, I'm stupid, but hey it's pretty fun so far. We're only up to max 8 mile runs once a week but it's starting to get a bit more challenging. Physically so far I'm good to go, but I'm having to learn more about nutrition, rest and pacing for a run much longer than I'm used to. The part I'm really worried about is when it gets colder. I hate running in the cold, but the race is in March so I have no choice but to hit it all Winter. Well, I have a choice I guess.

What else? I'm watching plenty of horror for the month, as you would expect, and have a nice little Rob Zombie festival planned for the rest of the week with a concert video of his, all his music videos, Halloween, Halloween II, House of 1,000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects. All of this leads up to seeing the man in concert in person next Thursday (with Alice Cooper and Murderdolls). I'm passing on re-watching The Haunted World of El Superbeasto because well, frankly I thought it sucked. Once is enough. To make up for that though, I'm going to watch 2004's Toolbox Murders, which star's Rob wife, Sherri Moon Zombie. Oh yeah baby, Halloween is near.

So far, I've watched the atrocious Alone In The Dark, Frozen, Eden Log, The Baby's Room, The Fourth Kind and A Nightmare on Elm Street (remake) to get in the spirit of the season this month. Many more to come. I'll watch more horror films than a normal human can endure!

So on to the new stuff in stores today! Check it out:

* All That Remains ~ "For We Are Many" CD

* Darius Rucker ~ "Charleston, SC 1966" CD

* Trapt ~ "No Apologies" CD

* Jonah Hex DVD (action/thriller with Megan Fox)

* Lost Boys: The Thirst DVD (yes, a 3rd Lost Boys horror film with Corey Feldman)

* CSI: Miami Season 8 DVD (David Caruso will remove his sunglasses I predict)

* Oxford Murders DVD (Elijah Wood crime thriler)

Movie Review: Eden Log

Synopsis: A man wakes up deep inside a cave. Suffering amnesia, he has no recollection of how he came to be here or of what happened to the man whose body he finds beside him. Tailed by mysterious creatures, he must continue through this strange and fantastic world with no other options than to reach the surface or die.

Visually, I found this movie very nice as it's very artsy and has a great grey look to it, setting a very bleak mood. Story wise I found it confusing and convoluted, even after the end and all is explained. Well, maybe not all is explained but most of it is and the rest is left up to the viewer I guess.

It starts out very claustrophobic and with little dialog and lots of grunting and such, but it gets more story driven as he reaches different levels and more characters are introduced. There are some action sequences but it's not heavy on them and they aren't really clear as the entire film is shot with hand-helds. The atmosphere is sort of the star of the film for a bit but when that wears thin I was left the story and some head-scratching. Smarter people than me, of which there are many, probably will have no problems following along. Admittedly I'm one who likes things explained, which it does, but it just feels like it takes too long to me and then it's still not that satisfying.

It's an acceptable, stylish sci-fi/horror movie with nice visual flair and some originality but ultimately I just wasn't satisfied with the story. It's never really boring though.

Your Mom is On Facebook?

Saturday Night Live comes up with the helpful "Damn It, My Mom is on Facebook Filter."

Movie Review: The Fourth Kind

Synopsis: A thriller involving an ongoing unsolved mystery in Nome, Alaska, where the town has seen an extraordinary number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years and there are accusations of a federal cover up.

A strange movie I thought. I liked the subject matter and think it had some great moments, but the approach was just odd. They tried to give it a more realistic feel I guess by using what they claimed was "real" footage along with more traditional story-telling. To me it was just distracting and sort of took me out of the moment of trying to get involved. For instance, the actress who played the "real" main doctor was fugly and then she was played by Milla Jovovich in the movie scenes, who is hot. It distracted me when they'd put the footage of the 2 side-by-side.

But anyway... other than that odd approach, I found it a very entertaining film with some good shocks and intriguing story. It's sort of like a pseudo-documentary and sort of like an X-Files episode of alien abduction. It's story driven horror/sci-fi with no big special effects. It gets a bit confusing at times but when it all plays out it leaves a lot of the blanks filled in and a few for you to sleep on.

In the end I think it might be a better film if I'd just chosen to go one way or the other instead of mixing the styles, but I was still entertained with the story. Had I not known it was all fiction and perhaps gotten more involved in the realistic side of it, I might have enjoyed it more. Still... worth a watch for genre fans.
