Movie Review: Zookeeper

Synopsis: A group of zoo animals decide to break their code of silence in order to help their lovable zoo keeper (Kevin James) find love -- without opting to leave his current job for something more illustrious.

Completely predictable and totally corny, this romantic comedy still has a bit of fun to it thanks mainly to the cast. Kevin James bumbles and stumbles and gets hit in the pudding cup just enough for some laughs as he feels like he ad-libs his way along, which makes him funnier really. You either like James or you don't and you should know that this is typical KJ here and he's got the screen for most of the movie. His real-life pal Joe Rogan plays his nemesis and they work well together I thought. Rogan seems a natural playing an arrogant jerk. Rosario Dawson and Leslie Bibb are great as the targets of James affection. Ken Jeong and Donnie Wahlberg's roles are both way too small though if you ask me, especially Jeong. The guy is hilarious and was probably on screen for all of 2 minutes.Completely underused, he could have added a spark to a lot of scenes.

The plot is just absolutely paint-by-numbers as a chick flick. Goofy but nice guy loses bitchy girl, tries to get her back... but doesn't notice the beautiful women who has become his best friend and happens to have the hots for him. Oh how will it all end?!?! Yeah, not too hard to figure out.

A plus is the soundtrack... with some tracks from Boston, Kansas,  Lionel Richie, Motley Crue and other fun songs.

Completely silly, yet a bit charming, it's got a good heart at least. I think it struggles trying to decide if it's a romantic comedy or a kid's movie. It lands somewhere in between I guess. Overall it's pretty cute and kid-friendly and they'll probably get more laugh than the adults. Neither age group will get many laughs though, but it's not as horrible as it seemed from the previews.

5/10
