Inside Stone Brewing with Greg Koch

I don't know if you've ever visited TheLip.tv but if not you should, they're doing some great stuff. A great example is their near 1 hour interview with one of my heroes, Greg Koch of Stone Brewing, Earth's greatest brewery. There's some great stuff in here, so I'll shut up and let you get to watching. Be sure and open a bottle or their Ruination or Arrogant Bastard before you do, or whichever of their outstanding brews you prefer.

"An exploratory visit to Stone Brewing Co., and an in-depth interview with its CEO, co-founder & mastermind Greg Koch. We see the brewery in action and then sit down for a long talk with Greg in the Stone Brewery World Bistro and Gardens.

Greg leads us through the inspirations behind the landmark label, as well as their philosophy and creative directions. More than just a beer, Stone is part of a larger artisanal movement that has set its sights on Europe as well. This is a true insight into the nerve center of one of artisanal beer's most successful brands."

GUEST BIO:
Greg Koch moved from the midwest to California, attended USC and spent time in the music business before founding Stone Brewing with Steve Wagner in 1996. Since that time, their label has exploded in success and acclaim, and become among the most recognizable quality beers around. BeerAdvocate Magazine went as far as naming Stone, "The All-Time Top Brewery on Planet Earth."

A spirited traveler and active community member in his home of Escondido, Greg has helped create a singular success among brewers.

Silent Hill Revelation 3D Trailer

I think I was in the minority that liked 2006's Silent Hill movie adaptation. There must be a least a few more fans though as they're finally releasing a sequel, called Silent Hill Revelation and it's in 3D (like every other movie now it seems) and dropping October 26th, just in time for Halloween. Check out the new below.

"Heather Mason and her father have been on the run, always one step ahead of dangerous forces that she doesn’t fully understand. On the eve of her 18th birthday, plagued by horrific nightmares and the disappearance of her father, Heather discovers she’s not who she thinks she is, leading her deeper into a demonic world that threatens to trap her forever."

Movie Review: Bitter Feast

Synopsis: An intense, pompous celebrity chef exacts revenge through kidnap and torture on a rude but popular food blogger who torpedoes his career with a few scathing reviews.

I read the synopsis and thought this was pretty much going to be another run-of-the-mill torture-porn flick, but it's actually quite a bit more character driven than that. Sure there's the torture bit but it's not over-the-top and there's really not a whole lot of it while the 2 main characters turn out to be pretty complex and they're well developed by the director so they're pretty interesting.

But it does suffer from being pretty slow-paced throughout a lot of it, really dragging in parts. And as I said, those who expect a gore-fest won't be satisfied, although there are a few bloody scenes. Some people who might like it more are the horror fans out there that like those cooking shows which seem to be all the rage now. The chef makes the torture some sort of sick "food tasting games", think Saw with food bloggers, which is quite fun at times.

A final point that I'll make that brought down my score a bit was that the ending, the final 20 minutes or so, seem to abandon what was set-up throughout the movie and just turn into some sort of slash/chase type film. It just felt odd to me.

Overall though, worth a watch for the originality and solid characterizations. Well done for a low-budget film too.

Hey, Great Seats Buddy!

Seems to me that the best seats at one of these bull fighting events would be way back in the back. But the way they treat these big, beautiful creatures at these barbaric events I guess it's cool to see the bull get some revenge.

Chaz The Intolerant Chicken

Since Chick-Fil-A spoke out in opposition of same-sex marriage recently, lots of people are taking shots at them and their non-accepting mentalities. Earlier this week the Jim Henson Company cut ties with them, so no more Muppet toys for their kids' meals. A lot of Muppets have hands up their tushes anyway you know. And then there's Bert and Ernie.

So Conan O'Brien introduced us to their new mascot: Chaz the Intolerant Chicken and his message does seem a little better aligned with the Chick-Fil-A brand for sure.

Eat up you Godless Sodomites!

UFC 150: Henderson vs Edgar Extended Preview

In my mind, this is how the top 5 MMA lightweights stack up right now...

1. Benson Henderson
2. Frankie Edgar
3. Gray Maynard
4. Gilbert Melendez
5. Nate Diaz

with Eddie Alvarez and Anthony Pettis in the mix somewhere as well. So there's some questions answered and some shake-ups possible at UFC 150 on Aug 11th in Denver. The hype is starting to build.

"Frankie Edgar wants his belt back but Benson Henderson isn't planning on giving it to anyone - watch the rematch of their amazing first fight at UFC 150. Plus, Jake Shields and Ed Herman both want to crack the upper echelon of the middleweight division."

Spousal Diaries

Wife's Diary Entry:

Tonight, I thought my husband was acting weird. We had made plans to meet at a nice restaurant for dinner. I was shopping with my friends all day long, so I thought he was upset at the fact that I was a bit late, but he made no comment on it. Conversation wasn't flowing, so I suggested that we go somewhere quiet so we could talk. He agreed, but he didn't say much. I asked him what was wrong; He said, "Nothing.." I asked him if it was my fault that he was upset He said he wasn't upset, that it had nothing to do with me, and not to worry about it.

On the way home, I told him that I loved him. He smiled slightly, and kept driving. I can't explain his behavior I don't know why he didn't say, 'I love you, too.'

When we got home, I felt as if I had lost him completely, as if he wanted nothing to do with me anymore. He just sat there quietly, and watched TV. He continued to seem distant and absent. Finally, with silence all around us, I decided to go to bed. About 15 minutes later, he came to bed. But I still felt that he was distracted, and his thoughts were somewhere else. He fell asleep; I cried. I don't know what to do. I'm almost sure that his thoughts are with someone else. My life is a disaster.

Husband's Diary (same day):

Keeping Up with the Hotties: Pillow Fight

How does Maxim always seem to know what I want? I was just last night thinking about I wanted to see a couple of 2011 Hometown Hotties have a pillow fight. Presto. And a bonus Brittney Leigh Glaze video under that. Well done.

"2011 Hometown Hotties Finalists Brittney and Lindsey duke it out in the bedroom. Find out what Brittney has been up to since the competition."

I'll Just Park It Right Here

Seriously, these valets are taking a few too many liberties I think.

Jon Stewart on Chick-Fil-Gay

So yeah, Chick-Fil-A CEO Dan Cathy is an evangelical Christian who is on record as supporting only marriage as it is “defined by the bible.” That book with the talking snake and mule. Yes, the same one that says it's OK to beat your slave, just don't leave marks (Exodus 21:20-21). And heaven help if you cut your sideburns (Leviticus 19:27)!!

Sorry to offend, I just don't get my moralities from an outdated, thousand year-old fictional book full of fables. I use my heart and brain to decide if I think 2 people who care about each other should be allowed to form a union. To each his own I guess, but don't hide behind the bible for your bigotries, fear and hate. Just say you're homophobic and move on.

Deuteronomy 22:28 - If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, 22:29 he shall pay the girl’s father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

C'mon though, really? Surely her raping is worth at least 51 shekels. 52 maybe even!

Oh how I love Jon Stewart.

Rita Ora : Too HOT This Summer

I don't know Rita Ora is really, but Complex Magazine posted this video claiming she's the next hot thing. Who am I to argue?

"You might not know Rita Ora yet, but we're willing to bet this is the first of many magazine covers you'll see from this gorgeous British singer. With a penchant for sneakerhead-approved kicks, an opening gig on Coldplay's summer tour, and a hit single ("How We Do (Party)") killing it at pop radio, it's no wonder all eyes are on Rita."

Staind Live At Mohegan Sun Arena

Staind has a new concert DVD out on August 14th called Staind: Live from Mohegan Sun and if this clip is any indication it should be fantastic. The blu-ray is $14.99 on Amazon.com right now. Get you some.

"Filmed at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut on 25 November 2011, this concert captures a typically raw and energetic performance by Staind on the tour in support of their eponymous album released in September last year, their first tour to feature new drummer Sal Giancarelli. The show features tracks from the new album mixed in with classic songs from across their career including many of their hit singles."

Jeff Scott Soto's Damage Control

Check out the new video of the title cut from Jeff Scott Soto's new album "Damage Control" out now on Fronters Records. JSS has still got some of the best pipes in all rock n' roll land in my opinion. I last saw him live fronting Journey several years back and the guy is the real deal.

Sandman Enters Orion

Metallica has posted another video from their Orion Music + More on June 24, 2012 in Atlantic City, NJ. This one for their classic "Enter Sandman" from their self-titled (or black) album. Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago now, released in 1991.

Your Metallica trivia for the day... according to Wikipedia (so you know it's true!) it is among Metallica's most-played songs, having, as of June 1, 2012, been played 1,087 times, behind only For Whom the Bell Tolls (1,232), One (1,251), Seek & Destroy (1,322), Creeping Death (1,352) and Master of Puppets (1,395) - all songs that were released before Sandman.

Book Review: The Litigators

The Litigators
by John Grisham

Synopsis: After leaving a fast-track legal career and going on a serious bender, David Zinc is sober, unemployed, and desperate enough to take a job at Finley & Figg, a self-described “boutique law firm” that is anything but. Oscar Finley and Wally Figg are in fact just two ambulance chasers who bicker like an old married couple. But now the firm is ready to tackle a case that could make the partners rich—without requiring them to actually practice much law. A class action suit has been brought against Varrick Labs, a pharmaceutical giant with annual sales of $25 billion, alleging that Krayoxx, its most popular drug, causes heart attacks. Wally smells money. All Finley & Figg has to do is find a handful of Krayoxx users to join the suit. It almost seems too good to be true . . . and it is.

As usual Grisham does exactly what a good writer does, he uses interesting characters in an intriguing story. It seems so simple does it? I've always just thought he's the best storyteller going and to me this book proves it once again.

The subject matter is interesting but you just wouldn't think a book about a tort law would be hard to put down. But he's added a law firm with 2 characters that are a lot of fun, in sort of a bumbling way, and a lead character that is sympathetic and likeable. Throw in a tough legal secretary and a colorful group of clients and it's just a really fun story that I couldn't wait to see what happened next with. The resolution is believable and satisfying and even after 450 pages I felt like it just came too soon.

I've enjoyed most of John Grisham's books lately, but this one just seems like he's having fun. It's got a good sense of energy to it like some of his earlier books.

Highly recommended. whether you give a rip about tort law or not.

Best Fails of July Week 3

YourDailyLaughz is back with their compilation of the best fails from the 3rd week of July, 2012. Expect the usual amount of wipe-outs and falling, including a lady trying to go up an escalator in a wheelchair for some reason, a minor league baseball mascot totally eating it on a 4-wheeler and several other acts of stupidity I can't begin to explain.

Optical Illusion

This is not an animated GIF, which sort of blows my mind.

Movie Review: The Presence

Synopsis: In this darkly romantic ghost story, a woman (Mira Sorvino) travels to an isolated cabin where she finds herself stalked by an apparition who has come to inhabit her space as his own. With the unexpected arrival of the woman's boyfriend, the dark spirit's haunting grows more obsessive. Soon the woman begins to exhibit weirdly irrational behavior as the thin line between sanity and possession begins to unravel.

Why do most people like ghost stories? Well, at least I know why I like them... to be spooked. Right off the bat this "ghost" is shown sitting in the house staring off into nothing. Which is what he keeps doing the whole movie pretty much. Yes, you see the ghost(s), but the other people in the film can't. It's not a bunch of spooky stuff going on, it's pretty much just the ghost standing around the house like a stoner. He's completely in human form, except for some bad powdery face make-up.

The other thing that really bothered me was that the heroine of the film is just a whiny pathetic loser. Guess what? She had a hard childhood so she's pouty and moody. You know who else had a hard childhood? The entire population. Suck it up and shut up. She treats her boyfriend so badly that I wanted him to just dump the hell out of her the entire time.

There's a bit that occurs a couple of times around their outhouse that gave me a startle and I thought it had some potential, but either I'm a moron who never figured out what the hell it even meant or it's just a wasted red herring. Too bad.

So the whole movie really ends up being a vehicle for a whiny, bitchy woman sorting out her domestic problem, while a few ghosts stand around here and there. Ghosts that look like people. Standing. Staring. Not spooking.

In a word... boring.

Zac Brown Band Breaks The Wind

I absolutely love the new animated Zac Brown Band video for their song "The Wind" so I'll share it and you can love it as well.

"An animated, guitar-shredding, big game hunting robot stars in the latest Zac Brown Band video for "The Wind," directed by Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Beavis and Butthead) and produced by Titmouse (Metalocalypse, Motorcity, Superjail!, China, IL, Black Dynamite)..."

We Are... The Four Horsemen!

Check out another Metallica live video recorded at Orion Music + More on June 23, 2012 in Atlantic City, NJ.... this one for the classic "The Four Horsemen" off their (hard to believe) nearly 30-year-old debut, Kill 'Em All.

Metallica trivia for ya... every fan pretty much knows the song is a reworking of the Dave Mustaine penned "The Mechanix". But did you know that Mustaine has claimed that the song's bridge is inspired by the main riff in Lynyrd Skynyrd's song "Sweet Home Alabama"? That's one to grow on.

Tsunami + Sharks = Bait 3D

I love shark movies. I realize that nothing will ever compare to the complete awesomeness that is Jaws but I still love shark movies. Sharks are just bad ass eating machines and they scare the ever loving hell out of me. So here's the latest HD (red band) trailer for another one... Bait 3D!

Synopsis: A freak tsunami traps shoppers at a coastal Australian supermarket inside the building ... along with a pack of tiger sharks.

Bait 3D is due September 18th.

Countdown to UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao

Here's the countdown show for UFC 149: Faber vs. Barao pay-per-view on July 21st, a fight card that has really been battered by injury. The current card looks nothing at all like it started out, but honestly is still a very interesting show. Coming off the big Silva vs Sonnnen fight though I'm going to have to take a break and skip this one.

* Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao (for interim bantamweight title)
* Tim Boetsch vs. Hector Lombard
* Shawn Jordan vs. Cheick Kongo
* Brian Ebersole vs. James Head
* Chris Clements vs. Matt Riddle

"Former WEC king Urijah Faber faces what could be his final shot at championship metal, while Renan Barao looks to extend his undefeated streak to 32 in a row and become a UFC titleholder in the process."

Dude Gets Sack Bitten By Cobra

Brad Gillis Hops On Board The Crazy Train

Eagle Rock is putting out a pretty cool Ozzy DVD tomorrow for older fans (like moi). Actually I saw Ozzy in Memphis on this tour the same month as this DVD was filmed. I was a wee lad of 16.

"Speak Of The Devil" was filmed at Irvine Meadows, California in 1982. The show was part of the delayed continuation of the "Diary Of A Madman" tour following the tragic death of Randy Rhoads in March '82 in a flying accident during the early part of the tour. The show features guitarist Brad Gillis who was brought in to replace Randy Rhoads. The concert is a perfect snapshot of Ozzy Osbourne's live performances in the eighties with dramatic staging and masses of energy with a setlist based around his first two solo albums and a few Black Sabbath classics. Ozzy has always been one of heavy metal's great frontmen and, despite the difficult circumstances, this show captures him at his absolute best.

Check out "Crazy Train" from DVD.

Line-up: Ozzy Osbourne (vocals); Don Airey (keyboards); Tommy Aldridge (drums); Brad Gillis (guitar); Rudy Sarzo (bass).

Track Listing:
1) Over The Mountain 2) Mr Crowley 3) Crazy Train 4) Revelation (Mother Earth) 5) Steal Away (The Night) 6) Suicide Solution 7) Guitar / Drum Solo 8) Goodbye To Romance 9) I Don't Know 10) Believer 11) Flying High Again 12) Iron Man 13) Children Of The Grave 14) Paranoid
