I saw a great link at Aol.com for their "31 Day Of Horror, The Best Horror Movies of All-Time" last year and thought it was sort of fun, as they revealed 1 per day. So I figured what the heck and I made my own list. The difference in mine is that it's in chronological order and I tried to represent all the decades somewhat and all the franchises and styles that meant the most to me as a horror fan for 30 or so years. So many great films left out of course, I could easily do another 31.
I always hear people talking about how modern horror movies suck and they don't make them like they used to and blah blah blah. It seems horror fans are the whiniest group of fans there are. They're always complaining and moaning about too many remakes, too many sequels, nothing is original, not scary enough... it's always one thing or another. So anyway, I'm a glass half-full (or 9/10 full usually) kind of guy so after my 31 below I'm tossing in 10 of my favorites from this decade for you to check out as they have my complete seal of approval. So read on.

10 More Great Horror Movies Just Since Y2K
10. Cloverfield - A good old-fashioned monster movie with a Blair Witch feel.
9. The Others - A solid ghost story with a nice twist and plenty of spooky moments.
8. Dog Soldiers - Big bad werewolves vs guys with guns holed up in a cabin.
7. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - A faux documentary on a slasher that's as funny as it is creative.
6. Feast - One of the funnest horror-comedies I've ever watched with non-stop action.
5. Silent Hill - A visual-stunning and creepy flick with a lot of bizarre visuals.
4. Shaun of the Dead - Sets a new standard in horror comedy with lots of zombies and laughs.
3. The Descent - Very creepy, claustrophobic flick about some cave dwelling freaks trying to munch on some hot spelunkers.
2. 30 Days of Night - Bad ass vampires terrorize a small, isolated Alaskan town.
1. Pan's Labyrinth - A fantasy/horror film that's visually gorgeous as much as it is thought-provoking.
Honorable Mentions... Slither, 28 Days Later, Hostel, The Ruins, The Devil's Rejects, Ginger Snaps, The Grudge, I Am Legend, Wrong Turn, Hatchet
Phantasm - what a movie! I thought it was cool as poo at the time. And, you know, poo is pretty freakin' cool.
ReplyDeleteAlthough Aliens was a really, really good flick, Alien was such a groundbreaking flick - I definitely rate it higher.
And then there's Halloween. And walking home in the dark after watching it. Definitely an evening I'll never forget!
I'm not much of a horror fan nowadays - at least not of the realistic gore and torture variety. Maybe it's having kids or getting older or having to face death a little to closely in these last couple of years - it's just lost it's entertainment value...
Another excellent blog by Cracker!
ReplyDeleteLove the list bro. I've seen all those movies and I agree, they are all must sees.
Good job bro.

ReplyDeleteAh yes, watching Halloween with screaming high school girls (settle down people, we were also in high school) and walking home late at night. That may be a blog all unto itself.
