Movie Review: Sinister

Synopsis: Found footage helps a true-crime novelist (Ethan Hawke) realize how and why a family was murdered in his new home, though his discoveries put his entire family in the path of a supernatural entity.

A mix of psychological terror mixed with a bunch of snuff films mixed with a bit of supernatural horror, this is a pretty decent horror film. I only found a few scenes to be big scares but overall the movie is just disturbing and pretty twisted. It's also just damn creepy and suspenseful.

Ethan Hawke is fantastic as he works through a mystery in a role that Hitchcok would be proud of. As he descends into madness and begins to come unglued, it's easy to feel sorry for him, be angry at him for his choices and sort of just be scared of him. Although his character does behave a little silly at times, like how about you turn on a damn light when investigating sounds in the night? Or when you wake up in the middle of the night and someone has obviously been in your house, you get an alarm, buy a gun or get your family the hell out of there?

Overall though, it succeeds at being refreshingly original with a nice twist. It's engaging as the mystery unfolds while still being equal parts spooky and sick. A fairly solid horror movie just right for the season.

7/10
