In the surf city of Luna Bay, California, vampires quickly dispatch anyone who crosses their path. Former pro surfer Chris Emerson and his younger sister arrive, having just lost their parents in a car accident. When Nicole unwittingly falls for a local vampire, Chris must locate and destroy the gangs lifeline before his sisters transformation is complete; to do this Chris finds himself relying on the expertise of none other than Edgar Frog (Corey Feldman).First off, this doesn't play like a sequel to the classic film Lost Boys, it's more of a spin-off. There are subtle references to characters from the original film, Corey Feldman is back as Edgar Frog of course, and they've even got Kiefer Sutherland's half brother to play the leader of the vampires... but I'd still call it a homage to the Lost Boys legend before I'd say sequel. Maybe even a reworking.
It does have the same tone of impending doom though and some of the humor, it's just gotten a lot more hip or modernized. All the kids are the beautiful people types from shows like The O.C. (actually the lead actress, Autumn Reeser, was Taylor on The O.C.) and so it ends up a much sexier film with more nudity. There's more straight-forward gore than the first film too, a sure sign of the times. Overall the effects aren't bad and the film itself looks good.
The story is pretty slim and the characters lack any real depth, simply a re-hash of the first one except instead of 2 brothers moving to the new town it's a brother and sister so the sister gets hooked up with a big bad vampire instead of the brother. The remaining one again seeks the help of the Frog Brother, and bloody mayhem and cute quips follow. That's about it really.
It is mildly entertaining for 90 minutes, especially for fans of the original. It could have been a lot better but it also could have been a lot worse. This doesn't suck by any means and if approached with an open mind not expecting a film on par with the original, it's pretty fun.

You are waaaaaay too kind on this one.
ReplyDeleteHmm... I had fun with it. Sure wasn't great but I didn't think it was bad either.
