Five years after jilting his pregnant fiancée on their wedding day, out-of-shape Dennis (Simon Pegg) decides to run a marathon to prove he can change and win her back.I really like Simon Pegg in Shaun of the Dead, but when I saw the previews for this I thought it looked a bit too "chick flick" for my tastes. Well it turns out I was right about that part, but I surprisingly enjoyed it despite the typical formula of "guy tries to win girl back".
Pegg is funny as usual playing the same sort of pathetic (yet likable) slacker as usual and the supporting cast is pretty good, with Hank Azaria playing a great part and Thandie Newton being as adorable as she usually is. Dylan Moran plays Pegg's buddy and sidekick and the screen time they share is usually where the most laughs come from. There's a fight scene that had me literally laughing out loud.
So yes, it's a bit too formulaic and predictable, but it's got some funny parts and it's just sort of a warm, sentimental romantic comedy that's worth a watch.
6.5/10
