Movie Review: Monsters

Synopsis: Six years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border.

From the previews, I was expecting sort of a mash-up of District 9 meets Cloverfield, but it's actually nothing like either movie. This is pretty much just a road movie and a love story all against an unusual backdrop of a world ravaged by some alien monsters. You know the monsters have been around as you see a lot of destruction in their wake, but you rarely see them as their screen time is pretty tiny. I'm not sure this will satisfy sci-fi fans and it definitely won't satisfy horror fans who need action. It's pretty slow and methodical.

Is it a bad or a poorly made film though? Not by any means. The love story is pretty well done and the acting and cinematography is really nice. I read the special effects were done pretty on a low budget on the director's computer basically, and you really can't tell. The time the alien monsters were on screen (again, not as much as I'd have liked) they looked really cool and you couldn't guess it was small budget.

Cool concept, cool monsters, limited action, realistic leads and in the end just a love story. Depending on what you're looking for from this, you may or may not love it. For me, I wanted an action-filled alien flick I guess, not a chick flick with a few cool alien shots.

6/10
