Movie Review: The Cabin In The Woods

Synopsis: Five friends go for a break at a remote cabin in the woods, where they get more than they bargained for. Together, they must discover the truth behind the cabin in the woods.

Well, well, well... what's this? An original horror movie? Why I do believe it is! It starts out as an absolute knock-off of The Evil Dead or Cabin Fever or any one of hundreds of horror films where some "kids" head out to an isolated location, meet a creepy gas station attendant who warns them to stay away and then go anyway. Which leads to bad things happening as they all behave predictably stupid. But wait, there's a twist. A real twist.

This ends up somewhat of a cross between The Evil Dead and Inception with some Scream thrown in for good measure, or something like that. It's an absolute blast. There's some comedy, some gore, some horror and plenty of entertainment, all in the right mixture. It takes cliched horror movies and flips them on their asses. It's clever, but not too clever, and still has thrills. There's some scares and plenty of action.

The special effects are really good and I found the acting to be just right really, not overdone but it didn't need to be. It's a bit tongue-in-cheek yet serious at the same time.

If you think the horror genre is dead, think again. Thank you writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard for this thinking-man's sci-fi slasher film that stops short of being a satire of horror, but more of a love letter to it.

8.5/10
