Movie Review: Lovely Molly

Synopsis: Newlywed Molly (Gretchen Lodge) and her husband move into her deceased father's house in the countryside, where painful memories and a malevolent force, whether her own haunted past or some supernatural 'thing,' tirelessly seeks to overwhelm her as she tries to figure out what is real.

This movie really prefers the old-fashioned creeks and groans instead of the big special effects for scares. It's got a nice bit of tension and overall dread with a gloomy, dark mood. Gretchen Lodge is just fantastic as Molly (who is actually lovely), which is necessary since she's on screen a good part of the time. Her character is tormented and you're riding right along sympathizing with her, trying to figure out what the hell is going on at the same time. Some scares are subtle and just creepy while a few will wake you up, so turn up the volume when you're watching it.

Ultimately you're sort of left wondering if you've just watched a supernatural movie or a movie about a tormented personality going over the edge. I felt like I got a satisfactory answer but I could see others interpreting it a different way. It does leave lots to talk about but I think gives you answers along the way.

As far as originality goes, it's nothing special. Isolate a girl (her husband drives trucks and is gone a lot) in an old creepy house (the house is the real star) and give her a tough childhood and an asshole dad to remember to haunt her memories and presto... horror movie.

It mixes some hand-held camera work with a some "found footage" type shots, but why wouldn't it as the director (Eduardo Sanchez) co-directed the ground-breaking Blair Witch Project. I'm not really sure these scenes were needed to be done this way but they're not distracting. For the record he also directed Ghost House Underground's Seventh Moon a few years ago and there are similarities.

Overall this is an effective little thriller with a creepy old mansion and some decent scary bits with a great lead performance. There's gore, horror, nudity and scares so everybody might find something to like. Not outstanding but worth the time for sure.

6.5/10
