Movie Review: American Horror House

Synopsis: On Halloween night, a sorority house hosting a party is overrun with ghosts, while the vengeful housemother (Morgan Fairchild) goes on a killing spree.

Let me start with the good. Some of the sorority girls get hazed into running around in their bras and panties for a bit. Some of the kills are sort of creative, gory and fun. The house itself is cool and Morgan Fairchild is quite over-the-top and actually sort of creepy. Lastly, the red hot Isabel Cueva has a small role (way too small). That's about it for the good.

The bad? Well there's plenty of that. The story is just stupid, the characters are equally stupid and there are basically just no scares. They also never really establish just what the hell is going on. I mean people are getting killed, yet instantly coming back as ghosts? Or zombies maybe, because they're re-animating their bodies. They're solid, like you can punch them. Sometimes. But wait, they also have some sort of super powers. They teleport and other things (but our heroes lock themselves in a room once and they can't get to them for some reason). They can pull you into a painting if they want by gosh. Also when they die, they come back evil and want to kill others I think. And people go missing, yet cops are never called to the place (a stupid P.I. is though) and nobody seems worried. They never get worried in fact.

But it's obviously intentionally campy, so most of these things can be forgiven and laughed along with I guess. It's pretty typical SyFy Saturday Night schlock so you know what you're in for, and it delivers.

So there's no suspense, no scares, a bit of gore, some fun kills, lots of stupidity, super-powered ghost/zombies, a stupid ending, the trusty "creepy kid" cliche and a stereotypical sorority... but at least Alessandra Torresani and Salina Duplessis run around in their underwear, so that's a bit of a win. And you'll laugh... purposely or not.

3/10
