Synopsis: The sadistic members of a villainous family, led by their mother (Rebecca De Mornay), return to their childhood home to terrorize the new home owners and their guests.
Take a home invasion movie, add a slightly over-the-top Rebecca De Mornay, amp up the violence and you get Darren Lynn Bousman's (the director behind such popular B horror films as Saw II through IV and "Repo! The Genetic Opera") re-imagining of the 80s "classic" horror film of the same name. But the name is about all these 2 films share.
This is not for the squeamish. It's pretty brutal and bleak and delves into the torture porn genre for a few very uneasy moments. De Mornay is fantastic and steals the show, but most of or all the other characters are very unlikable. I just sort of felt like I had no dog in the hunt. I didn't like anyone and was very unsympathetic to their suffering, other than just on a human level as they're subjected to some pretty crude and wretched stuff. Again, it's sort of hard to watch and at nearly 2 hours there's a lot of watching to do.
But all that aside, it's a very involving movie in a sick-and-twisted sort of way. I found it to be well made with some grisly gore and a high body count. As a bonus there's some eye candy (for both the ladies and men) as it stars beautiful people like Jamie King, Patrick John Flueger and one of my personal favorite ladies in Hollywood, Briana Evigan. I'd watch a sleeping contest if she were in it.
If you can stomach it, this is a pretty decent and sick thriller that overstays it's welcome a bit.
6/10
