Synopsis: A freak tsunami traps shoppers at a coastal Australian supermarket inside the building - along with a couple of 12-foot Great White sharks who are doing a little grocery shopping of their own, for fresh meat.
Just from reading the synopsis of this movie, I was sort of expecting a typical low-budget SyFy channel quality movie, but actually it turns out to be pretty interesting and decent. Taken at face value, it's actually just 90 minutes of shark infested fun. It's probably not going to win any awards but definitely had me vested and interested throughout.
That's not to say there isn't some bad, cheesiness to be found either. There's a "shark suit" scene that's just embarrassing, there's one character who is a bit too over-the-top and annoying, there's a Paris Hilton wannabe and her little dog and surfer boyfriend that I wanted to see become shark-bait early on and although some of the shark effects are pretty decent, there are a lot of scenes with the shark that look pretty laughable. Lastly, the accents were all over the place.
Most of the characters aren't too bad though and this is what hooked me (see what I did there?) a bit. They were likable and real and it gave the movie a more serious tone, when I expected it not to take itself to seriously (like for instance the recent and retched Jersey Shore Shark Attack). There were back stories and some slight depth to some of the people, not just shark food.
Again, some of the shark scenes are actually pretty cool looking and if you buy into the location, which they do a good job of setting up, and put yourself in their place it becomes a pretty creepy claustrophobic situation that I certainly wouldn't care to find myself in, unless perhaps I ended up stranded on top of the beer freezer (which sadly, they don't).
I didn't see the 3D version of this, but I can only think of a few scenes (including the silly final one before the credits) that would have had much added by the use of 3D.
Overall, this is no Jaws by any means but it also doesn't try to be. It's just very watchable in my opinion.
6/10
