Synopsis: A man (Stephen Moyer) takes his family on a camping trip and becomes convinced they are being stalked by the legendary monster of the New Jersey Pine Barrens: the Jersey Devil.
I may have had my expectations a bit high for this one as it's directed and written by Darren Lynn Bousman (although you'd think "11-11-11" might have warned me), stars Stephen Moyer (of HBO's True Blood fame) and is about the legendary Jersey Devil (or is it?). I was a bit let down overall I guess but there are still some things to like about this film.
It turns out that it's not just about the Jersey Devil, but really the man's battle going on within his own mind and his struggle with sanity over what's real and what's not. Moyer is great, although his character may get a bit over-the-top and annoying at times. He's also pretty abusive towards his family and is basically terrorizing them, which sort of makes it hard to sympathize with him when things turn to poo.
But ultimately this theme over what's real and what's not makes this more of a psychological thriller than a monster movie, so know to expect. It's more like "The Shining" than it is a typical "lost in the woods pursued by a monster" movie really. It builds a lot of tension and has sort of fear of dread over the whole thing. Expect a bit of gore too.
Overall it's not a bad film and does a solid job of storytelling.
5/10
